NBA is removing the term "owner" and replacing it with a more appropriate term

adam silver

After several NBA players and media, members stood up against the term "owner" the league is moving away from the term and will be replacing it with "governor".

According to NBA commissioner Adam Silver, the league is in the process of establishing terms "Governor of the team" and "alternate Governor." The reason behind these changes comes from concerns that the term "owner" is viewed as racially insensitive in a league that is predominantly African American and where the majority of owners are Caucasian.

"I don't want to overreact to the term because, as I said earlier, people end up twisting themselves into knots avoiding the use of the word 'owner. But we moved away from that term years ago with the league. We call our team owners 'Governors' of the team and 'alternate Governors. So I think it makes sense. As I said, I don't want to overreact ... but I'm sensitive to it, and I think to the extent that teams are moving away from the term, we'll stick with using Governor."

NBA teams are slowly but surely adopting this term and some of the frontrunners are the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers who changed the name of their owners into managing partners and chairman. The plan is that other teams will follow this example in the upcoming season and make the necessary changes.
