Myles Turner on trade rumors: “I’m not valued as anything more than a glorified role player here”

Myles Turner on being put on the trading block

The Indiana Pacers shocked the basketball world when the organization announced last week that the franchise is looking to start over and be open to field calls for any of their players. Pacers center Myles Turner is no stranger to these headlines.

Turner on being on the trading block

The young talent has been a fixture in trade rumors surrounding Indiana since the Pacers acquired his frontcourt mate, Domantas Sabonis, from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Turner has been a consummate professional despite the negligence of his talents, but with news of the fire sale now out and about, the big man decided to chime in on the recent development surrounding his current team.

Before the Lakers won the championship by going back to a traditional frontcourt setup, the Pacers were looking to find a way to create beautiful harmony between their two young bigs. Unfortunately, Indiana never figured it out, leaving one of their young stars visibly frustrated.

It’s clear that I’m not valued as anything more than a glorified role player here, and I want something more, more opportunity.

Myles Turner, The Athletic

Can Turner become a star?

Myles Turner is a fine player and will help whichever team decides to trade for him, but if he is looking for a bigger role on the offensive end, he might end up disappointed. Turner has all the tools to be an excellent NBA player; his length and agility make him an absolute force on defense while possessing a soft touch and some respectable range on the offensive side of the ball. Myles is a unique talent who hasn’t managed to put everything together in his time with Indiana.

However, teams looking to rebuild their rosters need a little more than Turner’s upside as a promise in exchange for their current set of players, and I would be hard-pressed to find a team willing to give up a promising young draft talent for an up-and-down player like Turner.

Myles might never become an all-star. If that is what he is looking for, he needs to change his mindset immediately and start looking toward being a valuable role player, but this time for a championship contender.
