The basketball universe is mourning the passing of Hall of Famer Bill Russell. His family confirmed the news via a social media post. Russell was 88 years old.

Bill Russell reportedly died peacefully, according to his wife, Jeannie.

Mr. 11 rings had set the standards high when it came to winning. Russell’s 11 NBA championships remain untouchable in the league and across major sports in the U.S. He was also 10-0 in Game 7s, which speaks of how great of a competitor he was. Bill played for 13 seasons and won 11 titles. The lefty center averaged 15.1 points and 22.5 rebounds which was a feat in itself.

Fans consider him one of the best to play for the Boston Celtics for many reasons: he was a legend on and off the court. Bill Russell championed many causes, including the civil rights movement. Russell entering and dominating the NBA paved the way for other African-American players to dream and think it was possible.

Still, perhaps, his most significant achievements were not the trophies but fighting for his right to play and paving the way for other African-Americans to play in major leagues such as the NBA.
