Magic: "When it comes to backstabbing, it was just Rob"

Magic-Johnson-Rob-Pelinka

After his abrupt resignation, Magic Johnson went on First Take and decided to tell us his part of the story, and it's a story that will only add fuel to the Lakers dysfunction fire. You'd think "LA Lakers" is a high school.

According to Magic, when signed on with the Lakers Jeanie Buss told him it was fine for him not to be around the team all the time. He makes more money through his business ventures than with the offer the Lakers gave him, and Jeanie understood. The first year went OK, but then the trouble started.

And then I start hearing "Magic, you're not working hard enough, Magic's not in the office." So people around the office were telling me Rob (Pelinka) was saying things, and I didn't like those things being said behind me back, that I wasn't in the office enough and so on.

Magic continued to explain how these rumors started coming to him from people outside of the Lakers organization and even basketball. They called Magic and told him they've been hearing the same stories about him as well. He also mentioned several agents called him and told him he needs to "...watch out for Rob."

A new development was Magic sharing how he also had to "monitor the brothers", meaning the Buss brothers as they wanted more power and involvement in the Lakers organization as well. Magic seemed cool about that part, saying he was willing to help them "mature and get better." Here he hinted that not everyone in the family are happy with how the Lakers are going on.

"The straw that broke the camel's back" was when he wanted to fire Luke Walton. It seems he was the only one that wanted it (from the management side of things) and realized the decision was constantly being postponed. With all these things happening, Magic decided he wasn't really in control and having fun, so he decided to leave.

When asked about the way he left, without telling Jeanie or LeBron, so abruptly in front of the whole world, Magic had one answer, "I'm not a regretful guy." Make of it what you will.

One other weird thing - Magic said he told Rob during year two he was only going to be there for three years and Rob would get the reins when he left. This summer would've been year three done. The math doesn't really add up.
