LeBron James has overtaken Michael Jordan in the all-time scoring list and is now sitting in the fourth place behind Kareem, Karl Malone and Kobe Bryant. Despite his 31 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, the Los Angeles Lakers could not win again. The Denver Nuggets won the game 115:99.
5:38 minutes were to play in the second quarter, as LeBron James was served under the basket (assist from Rajon Rondo). The superstar put the ball into the basket and was fouled by Torrey Craig. It was his 13th and 14th point that evening. He had just overtaken Michael Jordan in the all-time scoring list. Fans, teammates, and opponents celebrated and congratulated him. After he sank the free throw, there was a break and a tribute video was played in his honor on the video cube. King James was overcome by his own emotions. LeBron sat at the bottom of the bench, his head buried in a towel, leaving tears running.
Even for someone who has already achieved everything in his career and set huge amounts of records, it is still something special to overtake his idol in such an important statistic.
The 34-year-old James is among the last active players who were old enough to witness Jordan in his prime with the Chicago Bulls. James grew up in Akron, Ohio, and he said that he admired Michael Jordan as "the best ever".
There are certain milestones that it's nice to take a moment and embrace and honor," Lakers coach Luke Walton said before the game. "Michael is a guy that guys like LeBron, myself included, grew up watching. That is THE guy, Michael Jordan. So to pass him in anything, especially scoring, would be something that we aren't going to see very often.
