LeBron James' promise tweet to Laker Nation is not aging well

Magic Johnson and LeBron James have now reportedly “scarred their relationship”

After a Nuggets squad with only one more win than the Lakers smacked them down like a heavyweight champ would beat an amateur in the minors, the bruised-up LeBron came out with a tweet that hasn’t exactly aged well. But Magic Johnson’s response to the 37 point blowout was only the middle chapter in a now publicly reported feud.

Here’s LeBron's last-ditch attempt to alter what we now know was an inevitable crash course. I guess motivation and speaking it into existence wasn’t enough for the team to learn team defense.

The truth was the bus wasn’t about to crash when LeBron spoke out. They were 21-22, had previously lost to Sacramento, and had championship aspirations with three All-Stars. So the bus was already flying off the bridge at this point and was as good as gone. That’s what led Magic to this.

The two biggest things we have learned since

They are still bad, maybe worse...

Since the Denver massacre, the Lakers have gone 6-11. LeBron may have missed 5 of those and Davis 8, but their health doesn’t explain the full story of this franchise’s dysfunction.

Russell Westbrook is making fewer turnovers only because he touches the ball significantly less. He is still the inefficient, poor decision-making, defensively complacent liability that we all know and love. Talen Horton-Tucker, the guy who was reportedly completely off all tables in trade discussions before this season, looks like he's five years away from being a quality starter - even that's aspirational. Austin Reaves is kind of the best story from this year, but he's averaging 6 points a game. That tells you all you need to know.

The rest of the roster is either way past being past their prime or whatever you call the fragility of Anthony Davis. That leaves LeBron James, whose been by far the best player and one of the worst. He has mentally checked out of this season, which has repercussions to the rest of the locker room. This was shown when he got booed by his home crowd.

Magic and LeBron have legitimate beef?

I also think it’s interesting to point out that I’m not so sure that LeBron and Magic are on the greatest of terms right now,” Windhorst said on a recent episode of the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast. “LeBron was very upset that Magic pulled the ripcord after the first year and didn’t even tell him, just did it.

“There’s scar tissue there, and earlier this year, when Magic criticized the Lakers, and rightly so — it wasn’t hard to criticize the Lakers — and LeBron was asked about it, LeBron declined to talk about it.”

This puzzle will unveil itself in the coming months - especially next offseason when LeBron inevitably goes back on his once mission to keep Russ in Tinsel Town. But when you’re angry, you never just fight with one person.

Can’t wait for this to unfold.
