LeBron "If we allow basketball to define who we are, then we’re nothing."

Carmelo Anthony's return started off rocky, but after getting back into NBA shape Melo has been posting 19.2 PPG / 6.8 RPG / 1.8 APG on 60.7% TS in his last five games. The Blazers are 4 -1 in those 5 games. LeBron James shared how he feels about his friend's return and pointed out there are things outside and beyond basketball, that maybe matter even more.

Since his ousting from Houston, Anthony wanted another shot in the NBA. Going out like that would leave a big "what if" for him, despite the fact Melo said he was ready to retire. Since he got into the NBA, Melo was compared to LeBron. Some even predicted he would have a better NBA career than LeBron. That never impacted their friendship - they were there for each other no matter what.

One of the things that connected them was talking about life after basketball. LeBron and Carmelo never wanted to be just basketball players. They both have far bigger dreams and plans. LeBron pointed it out when talking about his vision for Carmelo's future and where he sees him (via The Athletic):

"What do I see in his future? Being right beside his son, Kiyan. Right beside him. Beyond that? (The basketball) is going to take care of itself. He’s a hell of a basketball player. He’s showing why. That’s nothing compared to what we always talk about."

LeBron's still one of the best players on Earth, Chris Paul is hoping to get traded to a championship-caliber team and Melo is bringing the Blazers back into the conversation. Meanwhile, Wade is waiting for them in retirement so they can start their post-basketball stories. It is what they spend the most time talking about. (via The Athletic):

"We don’t talk about basketball. That’s the thing. Our relationship, me and Melo, D-Wade and CP, we don’t talk about basketball. We talk about life and how we can change the world and change the people around us. Basketball’s going to take care of itself. It’s a huge part of our story, obviously, but it’s not us. If we allow basketball to define who we are, then we’re nothing. "
