Jayson Tatum on how he ignores trade rumors constantly swirling around the Boston Celtics - “Control what you can control”

Even if the Celtics trade Jaylen Brown, Tatum can’t really do anything about it, and he knows that, so he’s not going to invest himself in something he cannot control.

The Boston Celtics are fresh off a run to the 2022 NBA Finals. Although they came short, it was still a fantastic season in which Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown proved they could lead a team to a championship together, despite what their pundits have said throughout their careers. The Celtics haven’t made many moves this offseason, but the moves that they have made have reinforced their status as title favorites for the 2022-23 season.

Jayson Tatum reacts to the Boston Celtics’ recent trade rumors

Despite the Celtics being set up to win this upcoming season, they have reportedly been poking around at Kevin Durant as the star forward waits for his trade request to get granted by the Brooklyn Nets. Those reports said that the C’s were willing to include Brown as a centerpiece of a potential trade for Durant, which raised many eyebrows in Boston. Why would the front office want to break up a team that just made it to the Finals?

That’s a question that was posed to Brown’s counterpart in Tatum. Tatum said he typically ignores trade rumors, as he and Brown have been the subject of them pretty much their entire careers. Instead, Tatum tries to “control what he can control” and let everything else work itself out the way it should.

“I think that’s just something that you have to learn just to keep your own sanity and your own peace. They will literally say anything, and some of it might be true, and there are other things that just couldn’t be further from the truth. But, the average fan at home doesn’t know the difference, and they just might believe whatever they see. And it doesn’t help that people on the sports talk shows are talking about it every day and we don’t know who said it, so just control what you can control. That’s what I always live by.”

Jayson Tatum’s reaction to the Boston Celtics trade rumors is spot on

Tatum has a great approach to how he deals with trade rumors, from the sounds of it. He’s right in saying that many of the rumors that pop up are from unnamed sources, giving them the freedom to say whatever they want. Sometimes, those sources may be made up, too, as people love to create media storms on rumors that would “break the internet” per se.

That’s what the trade rumors involving Brown and Durant may be. Realistically, there would be no reason for Brown to be involved in a trade for Durant, and it may have just been leaked to the media by someone involved with the Nets looking to speed up the Durant trade sweepstakes. But even if it is real, there isn’t anything Tatum could do about it, hence his “control what you can control” mantra.

This isn’t the first time Brown has been involved in trade rumors, and it probably won’t be the last either. But Tatum isn’t a GM, and he has faith in Boston’s President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens, to construct a roster that will lead to a title. It nearly paid off last season, and if Tatum can go on the court and continue to play like the star he is, the Celtics could be on the way to winning a title this upcoming season.
