Jay-Z and Kobe Bryant were close friends, and there was a lot of mutual respect between them. Kobe was known as an avid Jay-Z fan who used to memorize all the songs in his album in less than a day, and Jay-Z, alongside his wife Beyonce, is often seen at basketball games. Jay-Z made a guest appearance at Columbia University, where he talked with students. One of the questions that arose in that conversation was about his sports agency and his relationship with Kobe Bryant, who recently passed away.
Jay-Z said Kobe told him he often looked up to him, and they had personal encounters several times. Their last meeting was at Jay-Z's house before New Year, and he he never saw Kobe so happy and satisfied with his life.
'Kobe was a guy that looked up to me, and we've hung out multiple times. He was last at my house on New Year's, and he was just in the greatest space that I've seen him in."
During their encounter, Jay-Z shared that one of the last things Kobe told him is that he needs to come and watch his daughter Gianna play basketball. Gianna, unfortunately, died in the same helicopter crash as Kobe. Kobe was convinced his daughter would become the best female basketball in the world, which is something Jay-Z picked up from their conversation and how passionately he talked about Gianna and her dedication to the game.
"One of the last things he said to me was, "You've gotta see Gianna play basketball. That was one of the most hurtful things because he was so proud, and the look on his face was... I looked at him and said, "Oh she's going to be the best female basketball player in the world."'
Jay-Z concluded his last memory of Kobe is of someone happy with his life, and he will forever remember Kobe as a great human being.
'That's all I'll say on that. He was just a great human being and was in a great space in his life."
