Jakob Poeltl is on the Boston Celtics' radar for a possible trade from the San Antonio Spurs

The Boston Celtics have been searching for a new center as they want to increase the depth of their squad now more than ever as they know that Robert Williams III still hasn't recovered from his left knee surgery and will be on the IL in the coming months.

This could be a quid pro quo situation for the Celtics and Poeltl, as the Boston franchise is in dire need of signing a big center, and Jakob Poeltl knowing his decent performances for the San Antonio Spurs this season, could land a bigger contract than what his current side is offering.

How good is Jakob Poeltl?

This season, the tall Austrian center is averaging 13.4 PPG, 10.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.2 blocks for the Spurs. These are decent stats for a center in talks to become a rotational player and increase the depth of a title-challenging Boston Celtics roster.

Poeltel has quietly become one of the best rim-protecting big men in the Associaton. Given the fact he is on an expiring contract, the Spurs would be wise to trade him if they feel the Austrian will walk away in the offseason, and the Celtics seem like the perfect trade partner as right now they seem one good rim protector away from being the title favorites.

Will the Spurs be willing to let go of their center ace?

The Spurs wouldn't want to let go of their big man easily, so they have continuously talked with him for a contract extension. But Poeltl, realizing his potential, knows he can attract better suitors who could provide him with the contract he seeks.

Windhorst pointed out the Spurs currently have the lowest payroll in the league, which gives them the edge to offer a large contract extension to Poeltl of somewhere around the $15 million a year mark. But having a stellar season so far, Jakob surely feels that he is worth much more than that. And he wouldn't be wrong to switch his allegiance if the right offer came his way.
