If it weren't for Dwight Howard, Andre Iguodala would've never become a Warrior

Andre Iguodala was an indispensable part of the Warriors dynasty. But if it weren't for Dwight Howard, he never would've got there in the first place.

During an interview with JJ Redick on The Old Man and the Three podcast, Iggy admitted that in 2013, Golden State wasn't his preferred destination. Part of it was because he didn't think they could make it happen financially, and part of it was because he had a different team in mind.

I was actually going to go with Dallas. Dallas was the spot. I was like 'I know they want to win, I like how they take care of their players who win championships. That was that long ago and we're seeing how it's holding up true, what they're doing for all the guys.' So I was going to go to Dallas.

At the same time, Dwight Howard decided to hit free agency after a one-year stint with the LA Lakers. After meeting with a few teams, the Houston Rockets emerged as frontrunners to sign Superman, and everyone around the league became aware of it. So when the news broke that he was also going to talk to the Mavericks, Mark Cuban jumped at it.

Everyone knew he was going to Houston, but for some reason he was like, 'I'm going to see Dallas.' Mark Cuban was like, 'yo, it's a generational talent,' which Dwight is, people don't put enough respect on Dwight's game. They were like, 'we got to give Dwight the respect and we got to give him a meeting because now we're on his list.' That was on Friday and he said he would make his decision over the weekend.

During those days, Andre Iguodala was working out with Evan Turner in LA, still eyeing Dallas as his preferred destination. But the Mavs prioritized signing Howard instead. D12 kept stalling, trying to make sure he would make the right decision, forcing Iguodala to reconsider his options. But luckily for him, that's exactly when his agent Rob Pelinka called.

He's been talking to Bob Myers, and they've concocted some madness. Rob knew I wanted to go to the Warriors, and I had already been doing my tech stuff, but I really wanted to enjoy playing basketball. They came up with something like 'we got a three-team sign and trade, but you got to commit, you can't change your mind.' I'm like, 'cool, let's do it.'

The three-team trade sent Iguodala to the Warriors, Randy Foye to the Nuggets, and a trio of expiring contracts along with a package of draft picks to the Utah Jazz, allowing Iggy to enjoy playing basketball again. In the process, he became a crucial part of one of the best NBA dynasties ever.

Dwight ended up signing with the Rockets, and the Mavericks struck out on all of their free-agency targets, all thanks to Howard stalling on making his decision. And looking back on it, Iggy couldn't be happier for it.
