Goran Dragić's run with Slovenia ends at EuroBasket 2022, now turns focus on Bulls' stint

Though his dreams of repeating as EuroBasket champions crashed and burned at the hands of Poland, the future looks bright for Goran Dragić as he suits up for the Chicago Bulls.

In an upset at the hands of Poland, Goran Dragić’s run with Slovenia at Eurobasket 2022 has ended. This was a disappointing finish for Dragić and company, who were looking to make a deep run in the tournament. Despite the early exit, Dragić can now turn his focus to the Chicago Bulls and his upcoming stint with them.

A bitter end to a promising campaign

Dragić and Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Dončić had high hopes of hoisting the title at the EuroBasket 2022. However, forward Mateusz Ponitka—who had a triple-double of 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists—and the rest of the Polish squad had different plans as they hung on for a hard-earned 90-87 win to move on to the semifinals.

As phenomenal as Dončić has been all tournament long, he was far from his usual form against Poland, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. He also committed six turnovers and fouled out with three minutes remaining in the game.

Dragić put up 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists for Slovenia in the loss. He was a steady backcourt presence all tournament long, ending with averages of 14.9 points, 3.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 turnovers, and 1.6 steals in seven games.

A bullish future?

With his stint with Slovenia coming to a bitter and surprising end, Dragić will turn his attention to the Bulls, who he signed with to play for one season. With starting guard Lonzo Ball expected to miss the start of the season as he continues to recover from a knee injury, Dragić will most likely step into the starting role for Chicago.

The 36-year-old veteran’s experience and leadership will be valuable for a Bulls team looking to make noise in the Eastern Conference this season after posting their best record in seven years during the 2021-2022 season. Additionally, his ability to score and create plays for others will be a welcomed addition to a Bulls team that lacked consistent playmaking last season.
