Giannis Antetokounmpo has had quite a busy summer, playing for the Greece national team at the FIBA EuroBasket 2022. The tournament concluded with Spain beating France 88-76 in the finals, and Giannis Antetokounmpo took to his Instagram account to document his summer. He posted a 10-picture carousel with the caption:
“This summer. This team. This jersey. This flag. Made me fall in love with basketball again. We kept our promise, we gave it all.”
Giannis recorded the best scoring average in the tournament
Antetokounmpo was a dominant force for Greece throughout the tournament. He missed just one game in the group phase, finishing with averages of 29.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in six games. His scoring average was the best in the tournament, with Lauri Markkanen (27.9) finishing second behind him.
The Milwaukee Bucks star's best performance came against Ukraine in the group phase, as he dropped 41 points on a 72.2% shooting night.
Germany defeated Greece in the Quarter-Finals.
Greece's knock-out phase started with a 94-88 win against the Czech Republic in the Round of 16. Giannis Antetokounmpo made an all-around contribution in the quarters, recording 31 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Giannis did most of the heavy-lifting, with Giannoulis Larentzakis chipping in with 18 points off the bench. However, Dennis Schroder's timely outburst - with 26 points and eight assists – helped Germany earn a 107-96 victory. Antetokounmpo played his heart out but could not push his team into the semi-finals, wrapping up his Euro summer early.
For Bucks fans, this means a few fewer games on his body and a renewed love for competing. Losing to the Celtics obviously got to Antetokounmpo. Playing for Greece helped Giannis rediscover his passion for basketball - the rest of the league got their warning.
