Giannis

Giannis Antetokounmpo is currently one of the best basketball players on the planet. He is a freak of nature who can get to the rim whenever he wants, and unsurprisingly, he has led the Milwaukee Bucks to a lot of success in recent seasons. Considering how the Bucks are 10-2 and leading the Eastern Conference already, it seems safe to assume that success will continue into this season.

Giannis hypes up Victor Wembanyama

Considering how good he is at the game, Antetokounmpo knows a talented basketball player when he sees one. And right now, the NBA world is going crazy over Victor Wembanyama, who is widely expected to be the first overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama is playing for Metropolitans 92 in the LNB Pro A league in France and will likely declare for the upcoming NBA Draft in a short time.

Wembanyama is similar to Antetokounmpo in the sense that he is a European player who is also a complete freak of nature. Wembanyama is 7’3 but doesn’t play like a traditional big man, as he can hit a bevy of tough jump shots to go along with being able to do everything else that a 7’3 guy is supposed to do in basketball. Antetokounmpo is among the current crop of NBA players who have taken note of Wembanyama’s talents, and he offered a warning as Wembanyama nears his entry to the NBA.

My friend, you will be in the league when this kid comes. Get ready, because if you’re not ready, this kid is going to be a problem. Big problem…I’ve never seen this before in my life. I saw him up close, he was on the same team as my brother. He’s taller than Rudy Gobert. He can block shots like Rudy, but he can shoot like KD. He has a good attitude. If he stays healthy, he’s going to be really good.” - Giannis Antetokounmpo, Serge Ibaka’s How Hungry Are You

Giannis doesn’t sound too excited to run into Victor Wembanyama in the NBA

From Antetokounmpo’s perspective, it sounds like he’s anticipating that Wembanyama will be a problem in the NBA whenever he decides to become eligible for the draft. Wembanyama is unique because he’s incredibly tall but still manages to play like a forward. It’s a skill set that hasn’t really been seen in the NBA to this point.

Wembanyama’s height already allows him to do a lot on the court, but he’s mobile enough to hit shots and play paint defense. There isn’t much he can’t do, and while playing in the NBA will offer the young prospect a new test, he looks capable of dominating the league. And that’s something that worries Antetokounmpo.

Giannis has spent most of his career dominating in the way many fear Wembanyama is capable of dominating, which is a scary proposition for the rest of the league. With Wembanyama likely set to be the first overall pick of the upcoming draft, it will be interesting to see who ends up landing the top overall pick of the draft while also keeping tabs on Wembanyama’s exploits over in France throughout his current campaign.
