There is a notion among NBA fans and analysts that the NBA is no longer competitive as it was in previous years and one of the reasons why this is happening is the friendship a lot of players nurture among themselves.
During their summer break, when players have the most time to work on their game prior to the beginning of the new season, a lot of players practice and play together in pick up games. For Giannis Antetokounmpo this is not appealing at all because he believes friendship shouldn't develop among players who are continuously trying to beat each other in the playoffs.
In a recent interview, Giannis shared his opinion on the whole topic and used the example of Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett who were known for being too competitive with not a lot of friends in the league while playing for their respective teams.
I don't know. Was Kobe even close with his opponents? Was Kevin Garnett ever close with the guys he played against with or Michael Jordan. It's just all about being competitive. If I know I'm going to play against them and I'm going to see them in the playoffs or many more years to come I try to stay away and not to build a relationship. I know that when I get on the court, I'm going to go a hundred percent so maybe if I built a relationship with somebody or if I'm close with somebody, maybe they would expect me to go fifty percent or go easy on them.
