The Donovan Mitchell sweepstakes are over, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are looking mighty at the start of the next NBA season while the Utah Jazz is finally hitting the rebuild button. One of the leading teams that had some chance of getting Mitchell was the New York Knicks, but they failed to make the right moves to satisfy the appetite of Jazz CEO of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge.

The Black Hole

The Knicks are a team desperate for a franchise player that can take them to the next level and instantly turn them into a dangerous playoff team. Over the years, the Knicks' management was known for his lack of competency and for giving out bad contracts worth a lot of money to the players that never deserved them in the first place.

One of the biggest Knicks fans, rapper Fat Joe, made an interesting comparison between Julius Randle and Carmelo Anthony in their success in winning games for the Knicks. In his mind, they disrupted the team by holding on to the ball and only looking after their own shots. Fat Joe even described them as "black holes" for their unwillingness to play in a system where they are not holding the ball or forcing unnecessary shots.

"Melo is a black hole, he is my brother, but Melo is just like Randle, and I love Randle I mean, everybody might be mad at me after this one but fuck it, let's do it."

The ball movement was nonexistent

Fat Joe's criticism lies in the fact that the ball movement last season wasn't the best for the Knicks, with Randle being the main problem in the entire system, especially offense. At one point of the season, it was evident the Knicks die-hard fans didn't appreciate how their team was playing, even though there were occasional moments where you could see they had potential but needed that other All-Star caliber player to become a consistent playoff team.

"If the ball is being moved and they are doing great, and he wants to sit there and hug the ball, do a little drop step, and shoot the s**t. That is the same s**t Melo was doing. When the ball is moving around, it's like a hold-up, let me get it, let me get my buckets. I would."

The Knicks signed Jalen Brunson and RJ Barret, and they still have Julius Randle as their most expensive assets taking up over $300 million over the next few years. The Knicks front office made some moves in the offseason, but none of them are jaw-dropping and could potentially do more harm than use in the long run. Mitchell would definitely be the best player on the roster, and even though the Knicks couldn't make a trade for him, they still have some options through draft picks in the near future. But, most importantly, they must give this team a chance and see if they can make some impact in a competitive eastern conference.
