Executive believes the Mavericks are one piece away from winning the NBA Championship

An executive believes a player of the same make as Tyson Chandler would be the perfect fit

The Dallas Mavericks' win over the Phoenix Suns is considered one of the best upsets in this year's postseason. The Jason Kidd-led squad definitely has the will and smarts to make a deep playoff run. Though the Golden State Warriors cut short their outstanding season, an executive believes they are one player away from winning it all.

Athletic center

The Mavericks front office did a splendid job surrounding Luka Doncic with a mix of reliable scorers and defenders. There's Jalen Brunson, who knows how to play on and off-ball offense; Dorian Finney-Smith and Maxi Kleber, versatile basketmakers and defenders; and the likes of Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans, who provide ample spacing.

This mix of players and their chemistry with Doncic is excellent. But their series with the Warriors unveiled holes in their game that they will keep in mind in the offseason. An executive believes a player of the same make as Tyson Chandler would be the perfect fit.

"'They're one player away,' an Eastern Conference executive told ESPN, suggesting the Mavs could win a title as soon as next season if they figured out a way to add an impact center -- in the mold of 2010-11 Tyson Chandler -- who could be a primary Doncic pick-and-roll partner, rebounder and rim protector," per ESPN.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban himself noticed how his team was getting pummelled in the rebounding department against the Warriors. He didn't drop any names. But it was clear that he was referring to Kevon Looney, who averaged 10.6 rebounds against them. In Game 5, Looney snagged 18 boards.

"We see what we need," Cuban said in the wake of the Warriors' closeout win. "When one of their guys is getting 17, 18 rebounds a night, it kind of tells the story. That's one of the things that we'll try to fix."

Potential prospects

When we're talking about Tyson Chandler, we're not simply referring to an athletic big man who can catch lobs as he did with Chris Paul or Jason Kidd. Chandler is a guy who offers intensity on both ends of the floor.

Looking at the upcoming free agents this summer, a few names could catch the Mavericks' attention. One of them is Deandre Ayton, the first overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, two ahead of Doncic. The Suns are still hesitant to offer him a max contract which he deserves. To make things worse, the big man isn't seeing head coach Monty Williams eye-to-eye after their collapse against the Mavericks.

A more feasible acquisition would be Andre Drummond. The man isn't as athletic or known for his offensive instincts. But he will crash the boards for you, block shots, and score under the basket. Just note that Drummond has led the league in rebounding four times.

More names will be floated around in the coming weeks. Mavs fans should be pleased that the front office already knows what they need. It is just a matter of finding him and luring him into Texas.
