Dirk Nowitzki thinks Luka Doncic surpassed him as a basketball player

Luka & Dirk

Luka Doncic will be on the cover of the NBA 2K22, which is just another proof he is officially a superstar in the NBA. Even though he is still looking for his major success in the NBA, he already established himself as one of the best players in the NBA, capable of carrying the Dallas Mavericks to another championship.

During a recent interview for NBA 2K, the greatest Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki talked about his appreciation for Luka. Obviously, this is not the first or the last he spoke so highly about him, but this time he said something he never said before. Dirk already considers Luka to be a great player than he ever was, even in his prime, which is a big compliment considering Luka is only 22 and technically far from his prime.

We developed a great relationship of course. It's a little sad that I only got to play with him one year. He's such a special talent and so good already at leading the floor at just 21, 22, and his just unbelievable all-around game. I would say he is better than me now than I've ever been in my prime and that's how good he is at 22 already. And it's been a pleasure being around him, he is a good kid, he wants to do well. We had a good relationship and we stay in touch, I'm always there if he needs something or if he has a question of if he's going through something. Obviously, I will always try to help him out.

We've seen Luka becoming one of the most dominant players in the league in the past two years, and the sky is the limit for this kid. The Mavs will need to put more pieces around him if he wants to succeed in the same way Dirk did in 2011. Even though Dirk is regarded as one of the best power forwards ever to lace them up, there is no question he truly means what he is saying about Luka surpassing him.

No matter the outcome, Luka's stellar individual performance put him on the map, and with the right supporting cast, the Mavs can become a contender in the western conference. Hopefully, he can replicate the same or even better team success as Dirk had throughout his tenure with the Mavs.
