The Spurs are 13th in the Western Conference with a 6 - 13 record, and it looks like this team needs a shake-up. So when DeRozan cleared his Instagram profile everyone remembered the same thing happened around the time he was traded to San Antonio. What's happening?
If you were to name stars that have the most antiquated game in 2019 NBA, LaMarcus Aldrige and DeMar DeRozan would quickly come up. They are both on the wrong side of thirty and all signs indicate they will only become less efficient in the NBA. Their love for the mid-range makes them an awkward fit, proven by the fact the Spurs' worst lineups are when their two stars are on the floor at the same time. Aldrige is under contract until '20/'21, while DeRozan has a player option in '20/'21.
Given the fact next year's free agency is going to be extremely weak, DeRozan is likely to opt-out and get a longer deal somewhere. Add to that the fact that Spurs have a lot of young players at guard positions (Murray, White, Walker) that need minutes, if you have to pick between DeRozan and Aldrige, DeMar is the logical pick for a trade.
Then DeMar cleared his entire Instagram profile. This has most notably happened after his trade from Toronto, so everyone started to wonder are we that close to a trade? Orlando was being mentioned repeatedly as an interested party to get him. Turns out, it was something else. (via Tom Osborn)
"I don’t even like social media, honestly. I’m not a big fan of social media, never been. To this day I always wish I had played in the 90s so I wouldn’t deal with social media. I just let people talk. Me, personally, I hate it."
After Kevin Love spoke up about his mental health issues, DeMar was the next NBA star to share his struggles as well. The research done on social media so far indicates that it's not beneficial to someone's mental health in general, especially if you struggle with it. But players often use it as a branding tool to acquire sponsorships and other lucrative deals.
We've seen players like Kawhi manage his public image and get off-court deals without any social media presence. If DeMar feels better when he doesn't have social media, he should just delete it. We will just have to find out about the trade the Spurs way - through a team press release. If you struggle with mental health, Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan have a message for you.
