Dennis Schroder is a “legit consideration” to join the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent

L.A.'s refusal to sign Schroder just yet indicates that they are still exploring the trade market in an attempt to get rid of Russell Westbrook and his massive contract

Dennis Schroder is among the many NBA veterans still searching for a new home in free agency this offseason. After a strange season where he split time with the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets, Schroder will likely be on the move yet again this offseason. It seems like he could return to one of his former teams in free agency with the Kevin Durant trade saga now in the rearview mirror.

The Los Angeles Lakers are considering signing Dennis Schroder

Earlier this offseason, Schroder hinted he would be interested in a potential return to the Lakers after LeBron James commented on a recent Instagram video of his. Schroder had a solid first stint with the Los Angeles Lakers before he inadvertently priced himself off the team. Now he could be nearing a return to L.A.

This news does come with a catch, though. Reports state that while Schroder is a consideration for the Lakers, it will ultimately depend on how the rest of their roster fills out. That’s certainly not a reassurance that Schroder will find a home with the Lakers and adds a bit of mystique to what Los Angeles could do rather than sign the German point guard to fill out their roster.

What could the Los Angeles Lakers do that would prevent them from signing Dennis Schroder?

The Lakers and Schroder seem to be somewhat interested in a reunion, which makes sense. Dennis is a solid secondary scorer who could play behind James and Anthony Davis in either a starting capacity or coming off the bench. But, interestingly, the Lakers aren’t committing to Schroder just yet.

What would prevent them from doing this? This is probably an indication from the Lakers that they are giving up on their pursuit of Kyrie Irving on the Brooklyn Nets this offseason, and one way or another, they will have to add to their roster. Their refusal to sign Schroder just yet hints that they may still be exploring the trade market as they look to unload Russell Westbrook’s contract.

If the Lakers could unload Westbrook and his massive contract this offseason, that would increase the likelihood of Schroder returning to the Lakers this offseason. Either way, L.A. could use some more scoring off their bench, so adding Schroder wouldn’t be the worst idea. And while it appears to be a real possibility, it’s interesting to see the Lakers not fully commit to Schroder, hinting that they are exploring other moves first.
