Commissioner Silver is considering a new Cup competition

Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the NBA since 2014, has once again shown himself open for a new cup competition parallel to the NBA season. Thus, there could be a new tournament similar to the cup competitions in European football in the future.

"It's my job to constantly look at other organizations and see what we can do better and learn from them," Silver told Marc Stein of The New York Times. "In terms of European football, I think there is something we can learn from it."

According to Stein, both the concept of a Midseason tournament and that of a pre-playoff tournament will be "intensively investigated" within the league. Such tournaments were already discussed within the NBA. However, there is still no formal proposal of the League Office.

Stein notes that Silver and the NBA are reliant on cooperation with the players and team owners to help them make any changes to the board that would be needed by an additional tournament. The TV stations will probably want to have a say too.

NBA: No Moving Off from the 82 Game Schedule

"I know I have to go up against some traditionalists who say nobody will be interested in the other contest, the other trophy you create," Silver continues. "My answer to that is: 'Organizations have the opportunity to create new traditions.' It will not happen overnight. "

However, Silver also emphasized that the 82-game schedule should not be shaken. If there is an additional tournament, the teams would have to live with a tight schedule. "I look to see how we can create the most exciting season and experience, especially in a rapidly changing media market where fans choose practically every day to consume our product or not," said the 57-year-old.
