A LOT OF WORK AND A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK

Renae Ingles got on the plane in Australia to move to LA. Her husband Joe was about to sign a contract with the LA Clippers and their NBA adventure was about to start. After 5 seasons in Europe, he finally got his chance. When she landed all she heard was “Hey babe, don’t have a job. What do you want to do?”

Ingles was told by the Clippers that he will get a contract, but in that last preseason game Jordan Farmar got injured and the Clippers needed a backup for Chris Paul, so Joe was summoned by Doc Rivers and told he will not be getting a contract. His wife already in the air, unreachable, he had time to think about what to say and what to do. ‘That was the one time where I’ve, not ever doubted myself, but just maybe I’m not at this level.”

Every success story has a little bit of luck in it, and this is where Ingles got lucky. While playing in Europe he played against a Quinn Snyder team. Snyder remembered Ingles and jumped on the chance to pick up his contract while the Clippers had waived him. The Jazz called and Ingles and his wife were on the first flight to Utah. As he explained it on Zach Lowe’s podcast: “I’m staying on this team. I don’t care who’s coming with me. I think it was me and two other guys that got in together. I was like ‘Bad luck for these other two dudes, this is mine, I’m taking this’ ”.

He made the roster, played the entire season, and got a two-year deal around $5 million. Seems he did well because on July 21st, 2017 he signed a four-year $52 million deal with the Jazz. He put himself in the position to get lucky that day the Jazz called and the league is better for it.
