Lamar Odom, who is a former sixth man of the year and two-time champion, had a very rough and controversial patch in his life after his retirement in the NBA. He was on the brink of death and managed to get back to a normal life.
In his upcoming memoir “Darkness to Light,” he shared a lot of crazy stories, but one of the craziest was about him cheating a drug test for the Athens Olympics back in 2004.
Being named into the team USA roster for the Olympics was one of the biggest honors of his career, but his joy would quickly turn into anxiety when Olympic officials informed him, he would have to pass a drug test to join the team.
For Odom who was smoking weed every day that summer, he began to investigate different ways to cheat the drug test:
“We started googling ‘fake penises’ and studied different ways to beat a drug test.
He would order it without many optimistic expectations, but in the end, it would end up working:
(An official) stuck a thermometer in the cup to gauge the temperature … satisfied that the pee was mine, said ‘Welcome to Team USA”
Odom would end up playing and starting in all 8 games for team USA in the Olympics and average 9.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, but the team led by young guns like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony would end up losing to Argentina in the semifinals and just end up with the bronze medal.
Odom has been relatively quiet after he was found unresponsive because of an overdose of cocaine and sexual performance supplements that ended up being nearly fatal in 2015.
But today Odom has recovered and returned to his basketball career, playing in the Philippines earlier this year and will be playing in the BIG 3 this summer.
