Kyrie Irving had a great game for the Brooklyn Nets last night after missing two weeks because of personal reasons. Unfortunately for him and the Nets, the Cavs came out with a win after a fantastic 42-point performance from Collin Sexton. Irving was cooking all night long, dropping 37 points. Kevin Durant added 38 points, and James Harden had 21, but that wasn’t enough against the Cavs, who played well as a team for most of the game and secured a somewhat surprising win.
This loss immediately after Irving joined caused many question marks. Whether these three playing together can drive the Nets’ immediate success, or it will take them a bit longer to build chemistry. Just like Durant, Irving has experience winning a championship and understands the process of making it to the finals and win in seven games. He reflected on his time with the Cavs and what made that team great, and hopefully, some of the things he learned can be applied to the Nets.
We were at the bottom, and we had to start and work our way up. When Bron came back in my fourth year, after killing it in Miami and doing what he was doing, he came, and then K-Love came, and the ball got rolling really, really quickly. It was new being around greatness every single day, seeing LeBron, seeing K-Love, see myself, Tristan, and I can name all the guys we had. We had a great collection of gamers, hoopers. When we geealed, we played the game the right way. We knew coming into every game, we had a great chance to win, and it took time; it took communication.Kyrie Irving, via ESPN
Kyrie admits having someone like LeBron James on the team helped a lot because he took a lot of pressure from other players in every way possible. When it came to the game itself, LeBron made it easier for other players by making the right plays, and he took a lot of the responsibility on himself. That was the main thing Kyrie learned from LeBron that he hopes to apply to the Nets.
It takes a lot of resolve and honest communication which having leaders like Bron takes a lot of pressure off myself. Being able to perform and lead the group and I was just learning. I learned as much as I could from him and other guys. It took resolve, compromise, sacrifice, and communication for that team to work.Kyrie Irving, via ESPN
Although the Nets lost their first game with the big three playing together, there is still a lot of time for them to get accustomed and build chemistry. That usually is a process with every team, some teams can figure it out, and they ended up winning a championship, while others fail in the entire process. The Nets have so much talent it’s hard to imagine them not make it out of the eastern conference, but we’ve seen crazier things happen. It’s now upon the team and their head coach Steve Nash to find the perfect balance, and the players need to buy into the idea and put their effort into making it work.
