There are a lot of expectations coming into the season for a few NBA teams this season, and Boston Celtics are on the top of my list in that regard. A young and talented Celtics had a great playoff run last year without Irving & Hayward so coming into this season with them healthy and pretty much with the same team as last year, you could say the start of this season is a bit disappointing.
Boston currently has a 7-6 score while at the same time it has to be noted that they were on a five-game road trip with the last loss coming to the Trailblazers in Portland.
Kyrie Irving who came back from an injury and put up some really good numbers in the last couple of games shared his thoughts on the whole situation with the team. He believes the Celtics need more experience and perhaps a good veteran player who has gone through the grind of winning a championship.
I think it just comes with, just some experience. “Looking at this locker room, me being in my eighth year and being a ‘veteran’ as well as Al and Baynes. Right now I think it would be nice if we had someone that was a 15-year vet, a 14-year vet that could kind of help us race along the regular season and understand it’s a long marathon rather than just a full-on sprint, when you want to play, when you want to do what you want to do. It’s all about attitude and effort. That’s all it is.”
Kyrie Irving has really matured in a good leader for the Celtics and believes this bad run they had was something the team needed in order to realize they will need to adapt in order to compete for a championship.
“We needed this,” Irving said. “We’re not as good as we think we are. I said it at the beginning of the season. The excitement is done. It’s real basketball now, so it’s not just about the potential of the team or where we’ll be at the end of the season. It’s right now and taking care of what presently is in front of us. We have challenges. We have barriers to get over as a team and individually. I’m going to be the most patient out of everyone. I’m not going to get too frazzled, too high or too low or stuff like that. It’s a long season. I just understand that for us to be special we just have to get through some challenges.”
The good thing for the Celtics is that the season is still long and there is plenty of room for improvement. Adding a good veteran player might do the trick since there were numerous examples where young and talented teams like the Celtics are now would benefit from an experienced player who could serve as a mentor to the likes of Tatum, Brown, Rozier, and Smart.
What is also beneficial for the Celtics is that they still have a few first rounds picks in their sleeves that could potentially be traded for a good player that could fit in well with the team.
