There is no love lost between the Cavs and Warriors. The LeBron Cavs, just to be clear. This always happens when you meet someone four straight years in the Finals (and your teammate starts randomly kicking people in the nuts).
After being the first team in history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals, the Cavs were having a blast being the NBA champions. J.R. lost his shirt for the whole summer and became the single largest purchaser of Hennesy. LeBron finally delivered the championship to Cleveland. Things were going well. Then, Haloween came around the corner.
The Cavs had their annual party and decided to mock the Warriors. The spread included little cookies with tombstones for the Splash Brothers and monuments to the 3-1 lead.
You can imagine this didn’t really sit well with the Warriors. They were considered one of the best teams in the history of the NBA. Their regular season record was 73-9, making them the most successful team in league history; eclipsing the Jordan Bulls. They strolled through the first two rounds of the playoffs and then beat a Durant-led OKC in seven games. Winning the Finals against LeBron would make them without a doubt the best team in NBA history.
Then, Draymond green decided to act out, Kyrie hit the shot of his life and LeBron made the play of his life, a chase-down block of all things. For the first time in NBA history, a team lost a 3-1 lead in the Finals. Two championships later, Klay is still salty about the whole thing. His chilled demeanor wouldn’t give it away, but all these guys are extra competitive. When you take into account the significance of that season, makes sense Klay would still think about that day. Here’s what Klay had to say about the party in question (via The Athletic):
“Oh, yeah. Ha! That was funny. Look how that turned out. Psssh. Bums. That was crazy. I forgot about that. Well, look at what pettiness gets you. Gets you 1-8 in the Finals. Idiots.”
The Cavs are no longer that team, LeBron is in LA right now, but this will for sure resonate through the league. You can be sure LeBron (the host of the Haloween party) took notice. The Warriors play the Cavs tonight in Cleveland and the Lakers on December 26.
