KEVIN GARNETT ON THE BUBBLE “That’s a different league. We were men, yo.”

KEVIN GARNETT ON THE BUBBLE “That’s a different league. We were men, yo.”

The takes are always the same: “These players wouldn’t last 10 minutes in the [pick your decade]” Every generation is softer than the previous one, that whole thing. But there’s another side of that coin, and the recognition comes from the last person you’d expect it too.

“To be honest y’all, we could never play in the bubble. You know how much I’ve been screaming during your shot ‘Get that shit out of here’? You could’ve heard me in here. Man they’d of had a bunch of censors. Couldn’t have all these cameras, you know, players walking around naked, balls swinging all type thing.”

Yep, that’s Kevin Garnett acknowledging the fact that the bubble wouldn’t last a month if his crew was in there. Despite Steven A. Smith’s rant, only one guy had to leave the bubble because of an unapproved visit. There were no significant incidents since the start. Players have shown tremendous discipline and commitment to making the bubble work. Of course, KG had to put his spin on it.

These guys are men as well. But we get Garnett’s point; his era was a lot more confrontational. Players, coaches, and GM’s talked about awkward elevator rides and bumping into teams they just played against in the hotel. Can you imagine KG and Carmelo riding the same elevator after a game?

“It [would have] been barbaric. We could have never been in a situation like this. It would’ve been chaotic (…) It would’ve been very difficult to put my timing and the guys that I played with and against into a bubble like this and have us not be like — we was high competitors. Everybody’s competing. Everybody’s damn near fighting every other play.”

I refuse to accept such machismo – that you are competitive only if there’s a potential brawl in the air. Donovan Mitchell and Jamal Murray proved that you can compete fiercely on the court, and still be cool off it. I know that’s not the point KG was trying to make, but it’s true. So every time you miss “the good old days when players were men,” be fair and accept that those guys would make the bubble a mission impossible.

According to reports, there’s a lot of talking we don’t get to hear going on in the bubble, but it would’ve been sweet to hear KG and the guys from his era talk during a game. I’d pay big bucks for an unedited “wired” with no hesitation. Maybe that’s the solution to get the ratings up?

A “wired” option you pay extra for with Kevin Garnett as the announcer. Even better, KG on blast so players can hear what he’s saying about their game while they’re playing.
