Kevin Durant dethrones Luka Dončić as MVP favorite per GM survey

Kevin Durant has been hailed as this season’s MVP favorite, according to general managers in the NBA. The annual survey reveals who the general managers think could win the title, MVPs, and other individual awards. The overall conclusion could be that, according to GMs, anything other than the Nets domination would be a surprise.

Kevin Durant favorite to win MVP

The 2021-2022 NBA GM survey results are out, and it revealed interesting choices and favorites from the general managers. Durant was the top choice to win MVP this season, getting 37 percent of the votes. Meanwhile, last year’s top bet to win the MVP, Luka Dončić, is a close second with 33 percent of the votes. Giannis Antetokounmpo received 13 percent of the votes, good for 3rd place, while reigning MVP Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets did not even place in the top five.

The survey also revealed that the Brooklyn Nets are expected to win the title this season with 72 percent of the votes. The Lakers, on the other hand, were a distant second with 17 percent of the votes. It would be a massive feat for KD should the Nets win the title, and he goes on to win the regular-season MVP. Despite the massive challenges that the Nets face in the Eastern Conference with the reigning champions Milwaukee Bucks and vastly improved Miami Heat, Brooklyn is still expected to win behind the star power of KD, James Harden, and (possibly) Kyrie Irving. The Western Conference is no joke either with the retooled Los Angeles Lakers, a healthy Golden State Warriors, and last year’s finalist Phoenix Suns.

The GMs expect a better season for Durant and the Nets after battling several issues last season. KD was sidelined due to injuries, Irving missed some games, and Harden came onboard in midseason, as reported by Basketball News. Still, Brooklyn overcame all that and was one game away from entering the Eastern Conference finals.

Should Dallas Mavericks fans worry?

Luka Dončić has been among the favorites to win the MVP in recent years. Now that KD has overtaken him as the best bet to win the award in the eyes of the general managers, it would be great to see Luka prove the GMs wrong.

Dončić has the all-around skills and confidence to win it, plus he’s a proven clutch performer. However, Luka needs to elevate his performance to a higher level if he wants to change the views of the general managers in the NBA.

Like Durant, who needs the support of Harden and Irving to lead the Nets to the promised land, Dončić needs Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. to provide additional scoring punch to help the Mavs go deeper in the playoffs. A healthy and focused KP could help Dallas with the support of new head coach Jason Kidd.
