After winning his second championship for his second team, Kawhi Leonard finds himself at a crossroads. It’s free agency time, and he is one of the most sought after players in the league.
While many basketball fans, especially ones that hold the Raptors dear, will agree that changing teams after winning an NBA championship would be a weak move, to them I say — Kawhi Leonard can do whatever the hell he wants to do. Because without Kawhi, the Toronto Raptors wouldn’t have been in a position to win the chip. And now once they’ve become the first ever team outside of the United States to win an NBA title, everyone thinks they get to decide what Kawhi should or shouldn’t do.
People should be more appreciative of the fact that Kawhi came to a new organization and a new group of guys, in a sensitive situation where he replaced Demar DeRozan as the new face of the franchise. The Raptors where one of the contenders coming into the season, but still, Kawhi was one of the main puzzles to make it happen. Likewise, if he ends up going to the Lakers, obviously the Lakers have a super team and are immediate contenders — but they still have to go out there and grind, play 82 games, and proceed to dominate the Playoffs.
All I’m saying is that we as basketball fans should be getting used to players moving around by now. Especially with players becoming more powerful in the most recent years with the strengthening of the National Basketball Players Association. Look at KD for instance; he got murdered for going to the Warriors. Ok, he did join the reigning champs at the time, but it’s called free agency for a reason, right? 🙂
With that being said, we’re all in for one hell of a ride because this has been one of the most exciting free agency periods in years. Will Kawhi stay or will he go? Only time will tell.
