Kareem believes fans are being cheated with the way basketball is played today

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was the ultimate back-to-the-basket NBA player. So how does he feel about the game gravitating more and more towards the three-point line and post play becoming a lost art?

I think the fans are being cheated because there’s no balance now. Everything is ‘we gotta run out and shoot a three-point play.’ When I played, there was some balance. We tried to use the inside game to set up the outside game and vice versa. That type of balance is not happening now, and I think the fans are getting cheated on the quality of general gameplan that’s being played out now.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, In The Zone

It’s all in the eyes of the beholder. Kareem is the guy who made a living in the post, in an era where battling down low was the standard. Today, it’s an aberration. The number of guys who are willing to play through the post is at an all-time low, which adds to the one-dimensionality of the game itself.

That’s when the fans being cheated part comes to play, and it’s what rubs Kareem the wrong way. The game is becoming too predictable, with no real creativity involved. Reinserting the inside-outside dynamic would unlock the game’s dynamism while making it more enjoyable for those who are not advocates of the way basketball is being played today. It would also allow guys who have the physical tools to be dominant down low to thrive while putting the focus back on the low-post game.

If that’s the case, Kareem believes more guys should turn to a trademark of his, which to this day is the most unstoppable weapon the NBA has ever seen. Something like that would cause the shift in general basketball philosophy, which, according to Kareem, is the prerequisite for Sky Hook becoming more common in the NBA today.

The fact that is already not being used more is frustrating for Kareem. And how could it not be? His all-time great NBA resume was built on the Sky Hook, and yet, none of the players today are even trying to implement it into their repertoires.

It works guys, no matter the dominant play style in the NBA. 38,387 points, 19 All-Star appearances, 6 MVPs, 6 NBA championships, 15 All-NBA selections, 11 All-Defensive selections, and the rest of Kareem’s Hall-of-Fame worthy accolades ar the ultimate proof of that.
