After one season in the NBA, Luka Doncic has shown the world he can be a franchise player and the Dallas Mavericks fans are hoping he can bring back the Mavs into the playoffs or even in a situation where they can play for a championship. It also helps to have a healthy Kristaps Porzingis on their roster. Julius Erving also known as Dr.J is a big fan of the dynamic duo playing for the Mavs and believes they can actually make an impact next season.

Dr.J is fascinated by Luka’s maturity at such an early age and thinks by playing professional basketball at the age o 16 helped his game evolve faster than some of his peers. Usually, players who are the same age as Luka experience competitive basketball when they reach college and even that is not on the same level as the league in which Luka was playing back in Europe.

“Luka is still not the top 10 player, at least not yet. He is one year in the league and had a great year as a rookie, it was phenomenal. Sometimes it can happen quickly for a guy year 1 too 3. In my estimation, when a guy gets into his fourth and fifth year is when you see what he’s got. The fact that he started playing professionally at the age of 16,17 hasn’t hurt him so he is more of an early bloomer than some of the guys that go to college here in the US or join the NBA after one year in college. He had a great season and he is a great replacement for Dirk.”

An important part of potential success for the Mavs will be a healthy Porzingis who was at some point during his time with the Knicks one of the best big men in the NBA. Dr.J believes his talent is unique because at 7’3″ he is extremely mobile and agile and his biggest advantage is his shooting ability that is unmatched by any center in the league.

“Porzingis when healthy showed a lot of potentials. He is an agile, mobile big man who can move outside. There are a lot of things he does on the court that surprised people because they don’t expect a big guy being so mobile. With today’s game when big men are shooting the three-ball and teams not having a dominant big man, it will be interesting to see how he manages the post.”

It will be interesting to see how these two young stars develop chemistry between them because that will be essential for the Mavs if they want to win more games next season. If they both stay healthy and further improve their game that will be a good sign for the team and their fans.
