JORDAN’S $7 MILLION DONATION TO NOVANT helps create health equity for the people of Charlotte

Just one year after MJ cried tears of joy during the first Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic’s official opening in the western part of MJ’s hometown, Charlotte, NC. A second larger clinic has opened its doors in the North End of the city, extending the range of care provided for the less fortunate.

The second clinic will be providing crucial access to primary and preventive care to the underprivileged community members in Charlotte, no matter if they have proper medical insurance or not. This is a giant leap forward by Micahel Jordan and medical company Novant as their efforts are providing hope for those battling with the country’s failing medical system.

The two newly founded clinics’ mission is to offer across the board primary care, provide psychological and social support, and address health equity gaps that have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Novant’s Dr. Michael Hoben, the clinics practice an “integrated care model,” which focuses on connecting patients with on-site social workers and other valuable resources.

The two clinics have been made possible by MJ’s $7 million grant to Novant. His philanthropic efforts have significantly impacted Charlotte’s residents’ lives during one of the most challenging times in recent history.

The first clinic set up last year transitioned into a respiratory assessment center after the coronavirus outbreak back in April. Ever since then, the clinic has performed more than 14,000 COVID-19 tests and conducted close to 12,600 mobile health appointments.

‘The impact of the first clinic has been measurable, and if COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is the importance of having accessible, safe, and quality care in communities that need it most. Michael Jordan’s commitment to improving the health of our communities and society is deep-rooted. We’re so grateful to be his partner in bringing care and resources to those who would otherwise be without.’

In the last year alone, the first clinic has seen more than 3300 patients – of which more than 450 were children. Apart from helping kids and young adults, around 700 patients have been assisted by the clinic’s social workers and have been provided with additional behavioral care.

Both Jordan and Novant Health have high expectations for their second clinic, as the first one has been a major success in its first year of operating. We’re sure that the second one will be another slam dunk, just like any other endeavor that had the involvement of his Airness. In the meanwhile, let’s just commemorate Jordan’s involvement with healthcare in Charlotte.
