Joel Embiid on Elton Brand as a new Sixers GM: “Two years ago I was dunking on him”

Philadelphia 76ers announced the other today that Elton Brand has been named the team’s General Manager.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft and 2000 Co-Rookie of the Year, Brand played in the NBA for 17 years, including parts of five seasons with the 76ers. A two-time NBA All-Star universally respected for his professionalism, relationships, determination and work ethic, Brand transitioned to a front office role with the 76ers following retirement from his playing career.

During a press conference today Joel Embiid was one of the first to congratulate Elton Brand for being appointed as the new Philadelphia 76ers general manager. However, given that he is Joel Embiid, the 24-year-old Sixers star could not let this moment pass without roasting his former teammate.

Embiid shared that his first thought upon hearing the news of Brand’s appointment was the time that he emphatically dunked on Brand a couple of years ago.

“As soon as I heard the news I thought about two years ago I remember dunking on him,” Embiid said via Sixers writer Keith Pompey. We actually talked about it when he got the job when I texted him. I just remember dunking on him really bad.”

He would, later on, say he admires Elton Brand and his recent success of becoming an important person in the Sixers management role.

“That’s crazy. That was two years ago,” he added. “Two years ago he was still playing with us and [now] he’s our GM. Much respect. I was happy for him.”
