There are not many Asian-American players in NBA history, but Jeremy Lin managed to put them on the map with his memorable run back in 2012 named “Linsanity.” Unfortunately for him, Lin didn’t manage to continue that superstar run, but he still built a solid career, as he is currently playing in the G-Leauge for the Santa Cruz Warriors, trying to get one more run in the NBA.
But Lin has made more noise off the court recently, as he has spoken out against the racist attacks against Asian-Americans in response to the increase in hate crimes against them in the United States. He posted this inspirational statement on his Facebook page:
“Something is changing in this generation of Asian Americans. We are tired of being told that we don’t experience racism, we are tired of being told to keep our heads down and not make trouble. We are tired of Asian American kids growing up and being asked where they’re REALLY from, of having our eyes mocked, of being objectified as exotic or being told we’re inherently unattractive. We are tired of the stereotypes in Hollywood affecting our psyche and limiting who we think we can be. We are tired of being invisible, of being mistaken for our colleague or told our struggles aren’t as real.”
“I want better for my elders who worked so hard and sacrificed so much to make a life for themselves here. I want better for my niece and nephew and future kids. I want better for the next generation of Asian American athletes than to have to work so hard to just be ‘deceptively athletic.”
“Being an Asian American doesn’t mean we don’t experience poverty and racism.”
“Being a 9 year NBA veteran doesn’t protect me from being called ‘coronavirus’ on the court.
“Being a man of faith doesn’t mean I don’t fight for justice, for myself and for others.”
“So here we are again, sharing how we feel. Is anyone listening?”Jeremy Lin, via Facebook
It is wild and sad that an NBA veteran of Lin’s status is still facing these kinds of problems and discrimination to this day. It is a really bad look for the NBA, as they have been very vocal in their fight against racism and stand for equality. They have done a great job supporting the “Black Lives Matter” movement and affecting people on that topic. They need to be consistent and invest the same amount of effort into solving these problems and speaking on the injustice the Asian Americans face in the United States. It is great Lin spoke on the topic, bringing attention and making the NBA do the right thing. After all, everybody deserves the same treatment. Racism has no room in sports.
