James Harden is on the pace of shattering the record for most three-point attempts in a single season.

The trend of shooting an incredible amount of three-pointers in the NBA is at its full swing, and it seems it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Most of the teams have the philosophy they can win by making more threes than other teams, with the Houston Rockets being the frontrunners in having that approach. Their best player, James Harden, is leading the NBA in three-point attempts, and last season he set the record for the attempts in a single season with 1,028.

This season he’s on pace to break that record by recording 317 attempts through the first 23 games. Last season Harden had 255 attempts through the same number of games, which shows a significant increase and is currently taking 14 three-pointers per game.

Despite all that, it’s still unlikely he will break the record for most three-pointers made in a single season, which is a feat set by none other than Stephen Curry in his 2015/16 MVP season. This season, Harden made 107 threes through his first 23 games while Curry made 119 threes in his first 23 games back in 2015/16.

Harden is currently the NBA’s leading scorer with 38 points per game, and it’s not even close. He increased his scoring output in comparison to his last only because he is taking more shots from the three-point land. His percentage is around 34 percent, which is not great, but it’s not that bad as well.

To put things into perspective, Curry took 11 three-point attempts in the 2015/16 season while making over 5 of them, which is good for 45 percent. Curry averaged 30 points per game that season, but his game was extraordinarily dominant and intelligent.

We have still long ways to go in this season, but James Harden will continue to take a lot of threes and free throws per game, which will get him in the record books one way or another. His efficiency has fallen off a bit this season, but there is still room to improve those numbers as the season progresses.

Last season, James Harden set the record for most three-point attempts in a single season with 1,028. This season, he’s on pace to shatter that record with 317 attempts through his first 23 games (through his first 23 games last season Harden attempted 255 threes).
