How Larry Bird wanted to embarrass Craig Ehlo in front of his mother

Not Michael Jordan, not Reggie Miller, not Clyde Drexler — none of those guys was Craig Ehlo’s toughest defensive matchup. Instead, the former NBA player, best known for being on the wrong side of one of the NBA’s iconic shots, went with the Celtics legend.

The one I really hated to guard was Larry Bird. He was not a nice guy.

Craig Ehlo

There’s an old saying that you should never sell the bear’s skin before killing the beast. I bet Ehlo wishes somebody had told him that before he started poking the bear. Instead of letting Bird sleep through the game, Ehlo had to try and rub it in.

There was one game in Cleveland where he was having a pretty rough first half. In the old days in Cleveland, you walked off the court the same way at halftime, and I kinda puffed up on him and walked beside him and was like, ‘Yeah, you’re 1-for-10. That’s defense, you know?’ He just kinda looked at me and said, ‘There’s two halves.’

Craig Ehlo

Craig should’ve known better. He was talking to the ultimate trash talker and the one who fed off people doubting him. The Cavs shooting guard should’ve just gone to the locker room. But he didn’t, and the upstroke was this.

He came back out and hit about ten in a row on me, and the last one was left-handed, and he asked me if my mother was watching because he wanted to embarrass me.

Craig Ehlo

Ehlo didn’t specify when exactly did this happen, nor whether his mother was in the stands to watch it live. But with or without her, Craig must’ve felt embarrassed. And the worst part is, he did it to himself. I bet that was the last time he said something to the trash-talking genius wearing No.33.
