HOW EMINEM’S TRASH TALKING NEARLY RUINED A COLLABORATION WITH JORDAN “I don’t think he knew I was joking”

Celebrities are a common sight at NBA games, and there have been many instances where they engage in trash-talking with league’s biggest superstars. Playing in the Wells Fargo Center will have you facing Kevin Hart, and you can be sure that Drake will be in the Air Canada Centre waiting to talk some smack. Spike Lee and Reggie Miller got their own 30 for 30.

Marshall Mathers III. decided to enter the conversation with a reckless trash-talking attempt at none other than Michael Jordan. In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning,” Eminem talked about the time he talked smack to MJ while discussing a potential shoe collaboration with him and how he thought that he blew the deal.

“We were talking, and everything was cool — and he’s super cool — and everything was good. Until we got to the end of the phone call, and I said, ‘Yo, man, when are you gonna come to Detroit so I can dunk on you?’ And it was crickets… And I remember getting off the phone going, ‘Oh my god, I think I might have just blew it.’”

He went on to describe how in his head, he was joking, but after hearing Jordan’s reaction, he realized that the joke wasn’t worth it. He quickly learned that he wasn’t supposed to joke around about competitive stuff with one of the most competitive people ever.

“To me, in my head, it was a total joke, right? It’s so ridiculous for me to think I could dunk on Jordan. It was one of those things in my head that was so ridiculous; he has to know I’m joking. But when I got off the phone, I remember thinking, ‘I don’t think he knew I was joking.’ Because he’s very — I mean, watching this documentary — he’s very competitive.”

Later, Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg explained how poorly timed trash-talk wasn’t the deal-breaker in the collaboration between the two. Their cooperation has resulted in some great products, including Eminem x Air Jordan 4, Eminem x Air Jordan 2, and Eminem x Carhartt x Air Jordan 4. However, it seems that if the two will be doing any type of business together in the future, Eminem has learned his lesson about not talking trash to MJ.

This is just another story that shows how competitive Jordan was and is to this day. He was all about the business, whether it was on the NBA hardwoods, playing cards on the plane, playing golf, or merely discussing some business decisions with a global music icon. His willingness to do things to the best of his abilities grew into an obsession that a lot of people don’t understand, but should all keep in mind when talking to the ultimate competitor.
