Tokyo Olympics are just around the corner, starting 23 July, and the Summer Olympics basketball tournament is traditionally the one that is getting most of the attention. This one will be no different, considering the Team USA roster. With numerous All-Stars led by an NBA coaching legend Gregg Popovich, Team USA is a heavy favorite to win the gold medal.
Pop will have to carefully navigate playing times so everyone on the star-studded team could show their skills. One of the most exciting players on the USA team, along with Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Damian Lillard, is Jayson Tatum. The Boston Celtics small forward is again working with Popovich – the first time was during the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Popovich spoke to the press after the practice, and he explained how he noticed that Tatum’s game had grown a lot since 2019.
“During that camp in 2019 and from that time to now, under Brad’s tutelage, he’s become more of a two-way player. He’s way more confident, he’s developed more skills, he’s, on top of that, more aggressive and he knows he can dominate people. He’s much different going into this situation than before.”Gregg Popovich, CLNS Media
However, the 2019 World Cup run ended in a disaster as the Americans finished only in seventh place. Popovich stated that he was disappointed when Tatum suffered an injury that left him out of the tournament’s knockout phase.
“He was going to be our go-to guy and he was just finding his legs, so to speak. Not totally confident, not realizing maybe how good he could be at both ends of the floor.”Gregg Popovich, CLNS Media
The legendary coach also received a question about the moves that the Celtics made during their offseason. Popovich said he was excited for former Spurs assistant Ime Udoka to land the Celtics’ head coaching role.
“You know exactly what you’re getting. I’m sure that’s what Brad Stevens felt when he interviewed Udoka for the first time”, coach Pop added.”Gregg Popovich, CLNS Media
So for all the Celtics fans out there, here’s something to be thrilled about. Tatum will surely benefit from working with Popovich and all those high-profile players, and on top of that, your new coach got praise from one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. This season didn’t fulfill your expectations, but according to coach Pop, there are many things to be excited about the upcoming one.
