The Los Angeles Lakers were one of the most active teams this summer, changing almost their entire roster. They probably have one of the deepest teams in the team capable of playing different styles on any given night. Their versatility and experience is something a lot of NBA analysts see as a significant advantage in comparison to other teams competing for a championship next season.
Gilbert Arenas hosted on the Knuckleheads podcast and said the Lakers are a favorite to win the championship this season. Arenas believe the biggest strength of the Lakers lies in their size and versatility. The Lakers have three players in Dwight Howard, Anthony Davis, and JaVale McGee, who in Arenas mind are capable of playing in the same lineup. This way, they can cause other teams massive problems on the defensive end of the floor.
“I’m going with the Lakers. They are just big, and the whole team is versatile. I mean, they can do a lineup that will kill — Lebron at the point, Kuzma at the two, Anthony Davis at the three. You can go with JaVale and Dwight. In hindsight, you’re like, oh, they’re getting killed. But no, especially not on defense, they will lockdown. Probably play in a zone type defense. You got five freak athletes jumping trying to block that shot. You can’t guard it. Their lineup is so big no one is paying attention to how big this team really is and how athletic this team really is.”
The Lakers will have one of the biggest starting lineups in the NBA; however, they haven’t yet experimented with the type of lineup Arenas suggested. It would be interesting if their coaching staff sees the potential in going big and use that lineup on various occasions during the season. It would be interesting to see if, in today’s era of NBA, where teams prefer to play small, that kind of lineup would do some damage.
