Giannis was once ignored in a restaurant in his city – being a champion will change that

Giannis Antetokounmpo might be a champion, two-time MVP, and Finals MVP right now, but three years ago, he was treated like a nobody. Giannis was already the leader of the Bucks when an embarrassing thing happened in a Milwaukee restaurant.

Antetokounmpo just wanted to eat

In 2018, fresh from a playoff victory over the Boston Celtics, Giannis was spotted at BelAir Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in Milwaukee. The guy was presumably tired and wanted to recover fast after a grueling game, but alas, his simple wish was denied. A fan tweeted that after 10 minutes of waiting for a staff member to attend to him, Antetokounmpo left. The tweet went viral, and the restaurant owners quickly offered an apology.

“We are very sorry we weren’t able to seat Giannis Antetokounmpo in as timely manner as we would have hoped. The Milwaukee Bucks’ big win, thanks to his tip in and the team’s great play, combined with today’s spring weather had people turn out in droves to celebrate and we had quite a wait. We were honored he came in for a celebratory meal, and wish we would have accommodated him right away.”

BelAir Cantina statement

In fairness to BelAir Cantina, the place was probably full at that time, and Giannis did not make a reservation. He was just treated like a regular customer who had to wait in line. To make amends, the restaurant claimed they would give Bucks fans free taco and reserve a table for The Greek Freak next time. However, it was not reported if Giannis dined there again. Given that he patiently waited in line after the Finals win, it probably didn’t bother him too much.

Giannis deserves all the meal he could get in Milwaukee

After the Bucks defeated the Phoenix Suns, the Finals MVP drove around town the morning after to ask for free food. His restaurant of choice was Chick-fil-A. He did not get any, and partner Mariah Riddlesprigger reminded him that Chick-fil-A is a national brand, so he would not get any free food. The video was posted on the internet, and it quickly became viral. Due to its popularity, Chick-fil-A could be sending an endorsement contract to Giannis soon.

Antetokounmpo is just happy and pleased he delivered his promise to the city and fans. Giannis asking for free food is just a way to reconnect to fans and make him more human. With his millions, he could probably buy ten restaurants right now. But he chose to order at a local chicken fast food, and fans loved him even more for it.
