At the press conference today heading into the All-Star weekend, Giannis Antetokounmpo answered several questions from the news reporters. One of the topics of discussion was the tragedy that happened 3 weeks ago in which Kobe Bryant passed away. Giannis was a big admirer of Kobe, who mentored the young player in previous years, and Giannis used Kobe as an inspiration to become a great player when establishing himself as one of the best players in the NBA.
Giannis said Kobe was his idol growing up and also a role model when it comes to basketball. Kobe was Michael Jordan for the younger generation of players, and this is how Giannis also feels. According to Giannis, one of Kobe’s most exceptional qualities was the fact he was willing to share all the knowledge he had about basketball. Anytime some player needed help, Kobe was always available to help or give a piece of advice.
“He was my idol. Not just my idol, probably the whole generation’s idol. For us, he was the Michael Jordan of our generation. He gave back to the game so much. He gave back to the players. A lot of people, when they’re so great, don’t do that. Talent is worthless if you are not willing to share it, and he was one of those guys that shared with us. He will definitely be missed.”
Giannis was one of the players who was extremely hurt when it was announced Kobe passed away. He immediately deactivated all of his social media accounts, and the loss of Kobe was something that affected him a lot, primarily because of the fact they’ve built a relationship together over the past couple of years.
