Former teammates react to dramatic Delonte West video

A disturbing video of Delonte West getting beat up in the middle of the street surfaced yesterday. In the video, West is laying on the road while a man is beating him up. Apparently, the police showed up to the scene as a second video of West handcuffed sitting on the pavement went viral.

West’s been having problems for years now. Rumors of him walking around Houston with no shoes on, asking for money started years ago. As it turns out, West is homeless and is supposedly struggling with bipolar disorder, according to the Washington Post. West said he spent most of his money during his career, passed on a few opportunities, got divorced and had to sell all his assets to cover his debts.

According to Basketball-Reference, West made over $16 million in his NBA career. Mismanaging personal finance isn’t rare in professional sports, and West himself said he worked in a furniture store in Maryland after his NBA career. The NBA has programs to educate players on taking care of their earnings and realizing what they make until the end of their career has to be the foundation for the rest of their lives.

In addition to that, West is obviously struggling with mental health issues. DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Love did a lot to raise awareness about mental health in recent years, but obviously, there’s a lot more to be done. West’s example is more extreme, and his teammates expressed concern and support.

More former teammates and coworkers from his basketball days came out, and it seems they will organize to get Delonte the help he needs to get better and back on his feet. If you have mental health issues, don’t hesitate to reach out for help, or provide advice and support for someone you think is struggling.
