Dwane Casey explains why he can’t play Derrick Rose more: “I would love to play him more and Derrick would love to play, but he can’t, I mean physically”

Derrick Rose is having a brilliant season so far for the Detroit Pistons. In 24.4 minutes of action, Rose is averaging 17 points and six assists per game shooting exceptionally well from the field. Rose is, without a doubt, a candidate to win the sixth man of the year award. Despite the fact, Rose is having a phenomenal season the Pistons themselves are not playing great in the last couple of weeks. They are currently on the 11th spot in the eastern conference, and their head coach Dwane Casey wishes he can use Rose more on a nightly basis.

In an interview yesterday for Detroit News, Casey said there is no way he can increase minutes for Rose simply because they want to keep him as healthy as possible.

“We had a meeting this summer with the medical people and his agent and everybody to come up with a plan to help Derrick. Believe me — nobody loved Derrick Rose more, and I wish he could play 80 minutes out of 40. But he can’t, so we have to protect him from himself. It’s up to the medical people; it’s their decision, and it’s their plan.”

Casey also said he would love to play Rose more than he is right now but believes his body wouldn’t be able to sustain that type of pressure. The Pistons coaching staff will have to be creative and resourceful to manage Rose’s minutes properly.

“I promise you, I would love to play him more, and Derrick would love to play, but he can’t, I mean physically. “We don’t want to put him in that situation, his body in that situation. So, according to the game, we have to be creative.

Rose believes he can contribute more to the team but is fully aware he needs to listen to the medical staff who are being extremely careful with his health.

“I feel good, but it’s not up to me with the minutes; it’s up to the coaching staff and the (training) staff to come up with it. “Of course, I want to be out there, but I guess they see something I don’t, and they’re worried about it — just being cautious with me.”

The Pistons won only one game in their last six contests, and things are not looking good for them coming into the new year. They are without Blake Griffin, who already missed almost half of the season and is not playing on the level we are accustomed to seeing him. The Pistons might make some moves in the upcoming weeks and trade some players away. There are already some rumors floating around how some of their players are available; however, Rose spot is probably secure. Rose is playing unbelievably mature basketball and is perhaps the most consistent player on Pistons roster alongside Andre Drumond this season.
