Free agency is just around the corner, as rumors and speculations about players moving around the league have already started swirling. One of the biggest names in the market this year will definitely be DeMar DeRozan – the versatile swingman is a very desired asset for many teams.
But DeMar has made it clear what his goals this offseason will be in a conversation with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay. DeRozan spoke about what his priorities will be in a search for a new contract and possible new destination:
“It’s all about winning at this point. Going into my 13th season, seeing all these guys competing for a championship…I’ve been fortunate enough to make a lot of money, but at this point, the ultimate goal is to compete for a championship.”DeMar DeRozan, Club Shay Shay
At 32 years old, DeMar is looking at possibly the last meaningful run of his career, and a championship is the last thing to grab on his list. Trought his career DeMar has achieved great personal accolades, notching 4x All-Star appearances and 2x All-NBA selections while playing with the Toronto Raptors. After getting traded to San Antonio, Derozan’s individual game dropped into the second plan, as Pop’s team-oriented system didn’t allow DeMar to have the same role. But DeRozan still showed up; he was one of the better players in this league, especially last season, averaging 21.6 ppg, 6.9 apg, and 4.2 rpg on good efficiency. Many would also argue he got snubbed from the All-Star game.
Of course, as always, the Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as the frontrunners for signing DeMar, as the fit seems to be perfect. DeRozan is a hometown kid out of Compton, that always dreamed of being a Laker. To go along with that, the opportunity of playing with LeBron James, one of the greatest in the game and DeMar’s biggest rival from his Toronto days, is very lucrative. It would make the Lakers, who are already contenders, even more dangerous. Considering DeRozan has made a lot of money in his career, taking a pay cut to compete for a ring seems pretty realistic, especially after hearing what he had to say.
“You’d love to have the opportunity to play at home, especially if they want you, why not? I think it would work [between me, LeBron & AD]. We’re smart basketball players and it’s all about coming together.”DeMar DeRozan, Club Shay Shay
To go along with all the above, the Lakers have also been rumored to be shopping for Kyle Lowry, DeRozan’s best friend from his time with the Raptors. We all saw how the split hurt these two, as the possible reunion in Los Angeles could be the perfect scenario for them. If the Lakers manage to add DeRozan and Lowry alongside AD and LeBron, we could have another superteam on the horizon, ready to take revenge for last year’s disappointing season. It will be a very interesting offseason.
