Darko Miličić explains the influence of money in the NBA

One of the best draft classes ever had one of the biggest draft busts ever. Despite being selected 2nd overall, Darko Miličić failed to meet the expectations that come with such a high pick. While Darko owned up his NBA failure to a lack of professionalism (and some bad luck), he spent 10 years in the NBA and understands the league’s inner working.

Obviously, a big Nikola Jokić fan, Darko was asked about his performance in the league and where Nikola stands in the center rankings. Of course, Rudy Gobert and his recent contract came up.

“We must be aware that money is the basis of NBA’s existence. If Gobert is worth that much money, then our Jokić should sign a contract for $500 million. That’s how much better he is than Rudy. For the NBA, marketing has always been in first place, and for the league to make showbusiness as much as possible. Those numbers that are turning around today are unreal. Yes, a lot is spent and has to come back but to give so much money to someone is totally insane.”

Miličić also thinks that Jokić brings a lot of different things to the table. It’s not just the big numbers, the triple-doubles, magical assists, and exciting plays. Something else makes him priceless for Denver.

“I’m very happy for him because I know that he loves basketball, he’s dedicated to it, and it can be seen that he’s very different from other NBA stars. I know how important money is in the NBA, and everything revolves around it, and Nikola enjoys basketball, and it can be seen on the floor. A totally atypical basketball player for their conditions who showed the budding stars, which people see as some aliens, that they are not. Everything comes back to Nikola for the hard work he invests, and it is very important to me that he is still so modest that money is not his priority. He still enjoys it. It definitely differs from other players.”

Jokić truly is as low key as NBA superstars come. In an era of stars fleeing to large markets, everyone sleeps peacefully in Denver, knowing that Jokić feels a lot more comfortable there than he ever would in New York or Los Angeles. Jokić truly has zero interest in self-promotion, and all he cares about is the team. Through that prism, he is the NBA’s unicorn.
