Bill Simmons is all in on Evan Mobley — “I really feel this guy has KG potential.”

After their surprising loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Paul George praised the young Cavs team and confirmed their zag on the league seems to work. The Cavs regularly play two 6’1” guys at guard, and then the Great Wall of Cleveland is waiting in the backcourt – SF Lauri Markkanen, 7’0, PF Evan Mobley, 7’0 and C Jarrett Allen 6’11.

While the entire league is trending towards small-ball, the Cavs seem to have found a group of seven-footers who are all mobile enough for them to switch almost any action. And you know what Kevin McHale said – basketball is a game of size.

Two positions take a long time to figure out – point guard on offense, and center on defense. The speed of the game and the nuances needed to play well in those situations take time. Yet, the only thing revealing Mobley is a rookie is a glance at his profile page. The young man is playing as if this is his 3rd or 4th season in the NBA. His game caught Bill Simmons‘ eye and provoked a huge comparison.

“I really feel this guy has KG potential. I don’t say that lightly, not a hot take. I watched KG, I was there the whole time.”

Anyone who follows him knows Simmons does not take historical comparisons lightly. A fanatic about lists and rankings, he wouldn’t compare just anyone to Kevin Garnett. But for Simmons to be completely sold on Mobley and his KG potential, one thing still needs to become clear.

“I don’t know if he has the f**k you mentality KG had, but I haven’t seen him take a play off in any game I’ve watched with the Cavs. He’s in the right spots all the time. His teammates are galvanized by what he’s doing on both ends. You can tell his teammates think he’s special.”

His understanding of the game is obviously at a very high level. Add to that the muscle the training staff will slowly add to his frame, and if the “f**k you” mentality is there, Mobley could turn out to be the best player in his draft class.
