Ben Simmons is a legitimate candidate to win the DPOY award this season

Ben Simmons is a matchup problem for most teams in the modern NBA. His versatility on offense allows him to create numerous scoring opportunities for his teammates. Standing at 6’10”, with 240 lbs he is a tough matchup for the majority of guards in the league. His god-given abilities enable him to wreak havoc on the defensive side of the floor.

Coming into the league and during his first two NBA seasons, many questioned his motivation and competitiveness. But now this has changed, and Simmons is assigned to guard best-opposing wings and guards on a nightly basis. One night he would guard Trae Young next night Giannis Antetokounmpo. That is something only elite level perimeter defenders can do. He is capable of defending guys playing different styles while putting them in uncomfortable positions, which makes their games against Philly everything but enjoyable.

Philly is one of the best defensive teams in the league, with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, which is not surprising. Playing with a great defensive center is causing us to oversee the quality of Simmons’s defense. He is averaging 2.1 steals per game, which is his career-high, and his length presents a lot of problems for the opposing players. This season he has to be included in the NBA All-defensive team together with his partner Joel Embiid.

DPOY was always considered an award for the big men, with the last point guard to win this award was none other than Gary Payton. To achieve something like that for a guard is a special accomplishment. Even though Draymond Green and Kawhi Leonard, removed the stigma of DPOY award being only reserved for centers in recent years, they are wings that don’t play a traditional guard position.

Offense in the modern NBA is predominantly happening on the perimeter, so it’s time for the league to recognize the best perimeter defenders. With his agility and length, Ben Simmons is a prolific defender. He may not be a frontrunner for the award, but he has to be included in that conversation.
