According to the New Orleans Pelicans, their star rookie Zion Williamson will miss his last preseason game against the New York Knicks. Zion is experiencing some problems with his right knee and the plan is that he stays in New Orleans for further testing. He will than be re-evaluted and hopefully play in the season opener against the defending championships Toronto Raptors.
“New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson is listed as out with right knee soreness for the team’s final preseason game against the Knicks. He did not travel with the team to New York today and remained in New Orleans to undergo further testing and evaluation at Ochsner Sports Medicine.”
Zion had a very productive preseason so far averaging 23.3 points, 6.5 rebound in 27 minutes of action. What is even more impressive is his efficiency since he is shooting 71 percent from the floor. The preseason games he played cleared out any doubt whether he can be a dominant player in the NBA. However, the problem lies in the fact that Zion was charachterized as a player that is injury prone. There were several NBA analysts that said he will need to lose weight that that will release some pressure from his knees and joints.
Zion had knee problems before, and when he was playing at Duke last season he suffered a knee sprain. He also missed the majority of the Las Vegas Summer league due to problems with his left knee. The Pelicans will have to be very carefull in managing Zion’s minutes this season but it’s definitely not a good sign he is experiecing such problems considering the fact he is only 19.
We’re definitely hoping Zion will be ready for the next season and that he remains healthy because he showed incredible potential. If he can reduce his weight and take better care of his body there actually might be a chance for the Pelicans be a pleasant suprise in a very tough western conference.
