[2010] “Why can’t I be MVP ?”

Prior to the start of the 2010-2011 NBA Season, Derrick Rose wasn’t shy about his ambitions, as hope sprung eternal for all players and teams at this time of the year, and guys are unafraid to say what they really think.

LeBron James may have won the league MVP the season before and Kevin Durant may be favored to win it that season, but there was at least one person that thought Derrick Rose has a shot for that honor. That person just happened to be Rose himself.

The first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Rose was named NBA Rookie of the Year and then in the following year was named to the NBA All-Star Team. After leading the Bulls to two consecutive playoff berths, a leap to the next level might have not been out of the question for Rose.

Rose spoke boldly when asked about his individual expectations for the upcoming season.

‘They’re high,’ he said confidently. ”The way I look at it, why can’t I be the MVP in the league? Why can’t I be the best player in the league? I don’t see why not. I work hard, I dedicate myself to the game and sacrifice a lot of things at a young age, and I know, if I continue to do good what I can get out of it. If that’s me going out and doing whatever, I’m willing to do it because in the long run I know it’s gonna help me.’

His teammate at the time Joakim Noah said: ‘Derrick is an unbelievable talent and things have really changed around here since he’s been in Chicago. If Derrick feels that way, that’s good for us.’”

As it turned out, his confidence was there with justification as he shocked the world and won the regular season MVP in 2011, while leading the Bulls into the playoffs as the no. 1 seed. Unfortunately, after that season it all went downhill for Rose because of the constant injuries.
