[2009] Rajon Rondo tells Chris Paul “I’ve got a ring and you’re never gonna win one.”

One of the most talked about topics surrounding the NBA the past few days has been the fight that broke out in the game between the Lakers and the Rockets or to be more specific Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul. The two veteran point guards got into it after a skirmish between Brandon Ingram and James Harden, but it looked like it wasn’t really about that. It was more personal and between the two of them.

Apparently, it all started way back in 2008 when Chris Paul beat out Rajon Rondo for a place in the USA “Redeem Team” for the 2008 Olympics. Rondo didn’t take it very well as he just came off a championship and felt he deserved that spot. He made sure let him know it next season.  Brian Windhorst appeared on The Hoopshype Podcast and said:

“The guys really wanted to be on that team. Chris Paul was established as one of the best point guards in the league… but there was some real competition… He beat Rondo out and Rondo got cut, and Rondo was not happy about it because he had just won a championship.”

In a regular season match-up in 2009 between the Boston Celtics and New Orleans Pelicans, the two guards piled up technical fouls that led to a confrontation at the end of the game. Apparently, Rondo told Paul that “I’ve got a ring and you’re never gonna win one.”Paul shot back at Rondo and the two had to be separated. After that altercation, Rondo requested never to be asked about Paul “now, tomorrow, or any other time.”

Doc Rivers and Paul Pierce who both were coaching or playing with both of them said they weren’t surprised about the recent accident, as they were well aware of the dislike between the two players. And now in 2018 it escalated as punches and even spit was involved.

In the end, the fight led a 4-game suspension for Brandon Ingram, 3-game for Rondo and 2-game for Chris Paul.
